About me

I graduated from the Faculty of Medicine in 2011 and commenced my psychiatric residency training in 2012 at Ankara Numune Training and Research Hospital. During the first year of my residency, I worked in a psychiatric inpatient unit, managing the treatment of patients diagnosed with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. In the same year, I attended the Sleep and Sleep Disorders course organized by the Psychiatric Association of Turkey (PAT).

In the second year of my training, I gained experience in both inpatient and outpatient settings, focusing on the psychopharmacological management of psychiatric disorders and the acute treatment of psychiatric symptoms in emergency settings. In my third year, I developed a strong interest in psychoanalytically oriented psychotherapies and received approximately three years of psychoanalytical psychotherapy supervision under Ülkü Gürışık. Additionally, between 2014 and 2015, I completed 'Family and Couple Therapy Training' led by Prof. Dr. Hürol Fışıloğlu.

During my residency, I also received training in neurology, child and adolescent psychiatry, and emergency psychiatry. In 2015, I worked at the Alcohol and Drug Addiction Treatment Center (AMATEM), where I further honed my skills in addiction psychiatry. I completed my residency in 2016 and began working as a psychiatrist at Ankara Dışkapı Training and Research Hospital. During this period, I participated in the 'Supportive Psychotherapy Training' program offered by PAT and obtained a supportive psychotherapist certification.

In 2018, I was awarded the Psychiatry Board Certification by PAT. I also completed 'Behavioral and Cognitive Therapy Training' provided by the Cognitive Behavioral Psychotherapies Association (BDTD) and 'Sexual Therapy Training' by the Sexual Education, Treatment and Research Association (CETAD).

In 2021, I was promoted to the position of Associate Professor. In 2022, I completed my Ph.D. at Maastricht University in the Mental Health and Neuroscience Department. My doctoral research was titled “Utilizing the Exposome Score for Schizophrenia to Predict Mental Health Outcomes.”

Main research themes

During my psychiatry trainee education, my area of interest was the role of oxidative stress and inflammation in the understanding of the underlying mechanism of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. After my psychiatric education, I took lectures on fMRI, MATLAB and cognitive neurosciences in Interdisciplinary Neuroscience Department in Ankara University. After an internship in Munich, I worked with Professor Stephan Leucht and Professor John Davis on a systematic review and meta-analysis about antidepressant effect of imipramine. I am awarded by the grant about gene environment interaction in psychosis by The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK) with Assoc. Prof. Sinan Guloksuz, 2020. I focused on the biological mechanisms underlying gene-environment interaction and environment-environment interaction in schizophrenia. I found that environment environment interaction (using a new method to calculate it) is related to the outcomes of schizophrenia such as functioning. I have published a series of papers showing the association between the exposome score for schizophrenia, which is a composite score of environmental liability for schizophrenia and functioning in individuals with psychotic disorders with Assoc. Prof. Sinan Guloksuz and Prof.Dr. Bart Rutten. One of my studies was awarded ‘Best Research published in European Psychiatry in 2022’ by European Psychiatric Association (EPA). I had a collaboration about Diversity Project with Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience, King's College London, London, UK. I still work as a guest researcher after my PhD in Maastricht University. I give lectures about the ‘neurobiological basis of psychiatric disorders and ‘neuroanatomy’ and ‘cognition in neurodegenerative disorders’ to psychiatric trainees in Turkey as online. The project about environmental exposures and telomere length, of which I am one of the researchers in Türkiye is supported by TUSEB. Nowadays, I focus on studies examining the 4 relationship between impairment in cognitive functions and epigenetic and metabolic biomarkers in neurodegenerative disorders.
